“Running for Office” Workshop – Session I

glen-koenen

West County Democrats held an introductory workshop for St. Louis and Franklin County Democrats thinking about running for local and state offices, discussing managing campaigns and recruiting and organizing volunteers.  The goal is to encourage active Democrats to run for local and state office, or to become campaign leaders for those who do.

Democrats can make a better government for our region and state, one that cares for people’s needs, maintains responsible budgeting, supports educational opportunity for all, and protects civil rights.  We need Democratic leaders at all levels of government.  WCD wants to urge like-minded, active Democrats to make a deeper commitment to Democratic leadership.

There were about 30 people at the first session of the workshop on November 15, 2016 at the Heights. We aimed to encourage 3 distinct groups: candidates, campaign managers, and campaign actiintrovists.  The moderator was Kenneth Murdock with an all-star panel: Maria Chappelle-Nadal, Deb Lavender, Bill Otto and his
field manager, Saad, Glenn Koenen and Harvey Ferdman.

The next session will be held on January 4, 2017:  “Getting into the next campaign and making a difference! ”  The discussion will include planning and decision making for new candidates, campaign managers, and volunteers. Experienced panelists will take the mystery out of becoming a new candidate for office, or being an effective campaign leader.

debbillThe third and last session will be on January 5, 2017:  “Leadership: Making your time, money, and efforts count!”  In this session panelists will let participants in on campaigning secrets. New candidates and leaders will leave with a clearer vision of what’s involved and a path forward, making the most efficient use of their time and resources.
