“Healthcare Financing: No Solution Without Policy”

Healthcare issues have always been on the public agenda, but financing one’s doctor and hospital visits in the U.S. became public policy within most WCD members’ lifetimes. Dr. Tuteur provides a historical perspective as well as a commentary on the current state of healthcare financing. Most of us benefit from Medicare/Medicaid, developed in the mid-1960s, but where does the funding come from? He’ll compare the effects of medical certification and evidence based medicine. He will ask, “Even if it’s better, is it worth it?”

The policy debate is grounded in a fundamental question: Do all Americans have a right to healthcare? If so, to what extent? What does universal coverage mean? What policies are reflected in the Affordable Care Act (“Obamacare”) and in Donald Trump’s actions since becoming President? Dr. Tuteur will share his experience- and research-based insights on questions such as these.

Peter G. Tuteur, MD is an internist/pulmonologist and Emeritus Associate Professor at Washington University School of Medicine. Professional interests include environmental and occupational lung disease, medical education, and health policy. He served as a Robert Wood Johnson Health Policy Fellow and as Trustee on many professional boards.
